- Discuss the dramatic change in Mrs. Gummidge.
- What connection does Dickens seem to draw between suffering and maturity?
- How do the names of Dickens’ characters reflect their personalities? E.g.: Steerforth, Agnes, Creakle, Dartle, Spenlow
- Would you describe Mr. Dick as a hero? How does his character grow in these chapters?
- Is Mr. Spenlow a good or a bad character?
- Do you suspect Annie Strong of infidelity?
- Describe the difference between constancy and hard-headedness in David’s defiance of Mr. Spenlow
- Uriah Heep is one of Dickens’ most dastardly villains; so is Steerforth. Compare and contrast them.
